“Dreise’s illustrations of animals in family settings are warm and inviting, and offer a great deal of visual stimulation for inquisitive babies.”
Today’s Sun is the tenth children’s book from award-winning Kamilaroi author and illustrator Gregg Dreise. Using simple language, as befits its intended audience, and charming black and white drawings, little ones can turn the pages of this board book to see possums, kookaburras, wombats, emus and other Australian animals and birds as they go about their business at different times of the day – from the sun’s early rise to its bedtime.
Dreise’s illustrations of animals in family settings are warm and inviting, and offer a great deal of visual stimulation for inquisitive babies. I was especially taken with his depiction of the tawny frogmouths, even down to their slightly mottled plumage, but all the creatures are clearly drawn with great affection. This little book, with its celebration of Indigenous artistic traditions, makes a great stocking stuffer for the not-all-that-far-away festive season.
