Lina Andonovska triumph in Berlin

We do keep in touch with our Freedman Fellows and have just heard from flautist Lina Andonovska. Lina linked us with this wonderful review of her performance in Berlin with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra of Australian composer Brett Dean’s The Sidura Dances. Brett also conducted the performance. Here is the review:

‘After a brief changeover, Australian composer, violist, conductor and adopted Berliner Brett Dean takes to the stage. A fluent German speaker, Dean – who is best known to many in attendance as violist in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1985 to 1999 – introduces his work for flute and string orchestra, The Siduri Dances. Stemming from Dean’s earlier work for solo flute, Demons, tonight we are treated to a brief yet brilliant rendition, largely thanks to Australian flautist Lina Andonovska who drives the performance with wonderfully extroverted command throughout. Weaving moments of real majesty from the piece’s gravity-defying melodic twist and turns, her display veers from rapturous and boundlessly expressive to a strong sense of placid culmination. Indeed, bolstered with remarkable accuracy by the Berlin Chamber Orchestra via Dean as conductor, Andonovska’s wunderkind display is a real highlight this evening.’

Freedman New Jazz series third concert

The final concert of the 2017 Freedman New Jazz series will feature the

Christopher Hale Ensemble.

This performance begins at 8pm with  2010 Freedman Jazz Fellowship winner, guitarist  Ben Hauptmann. Ben is widely acclaimed as one of Australia’s finest guitarists.

The Christopher Hale Ensemble will appear at 9pm. Christopher is the 2012 Freedman Jazz Fellow and one of Australia’s foremost exponents of bass guitar.

This is a special ensemble with Christopher Hale (bass guitar, percussion),  visiting international artist, Korean percussionist Minyoung Woo, with Simon Barker (drums)  and an all-star line-up of Melbourne musicians.

As part of his winning creative project for the Freedman Fellowship, Christopher Hale  immersed himself in the traditional drumming practices of Korea, undertook mentorships there and also with master drummer Simon Barker, whilst developing  performance networks that have come to fruition with this performance.

The concert will take place on Saturday 26 August at the Sound Lounge, Seymour Centre, corner of Cleveland St & City Road, Chippendale.
